COME ONE, COME ALL!

A few months ago I attended a Zine Making Workshop as part of Propel Youth Arts twentyten initiative. I thought it would be interesting to see if I could come up with something fashion oriented using a different print medium. A ‘zine’ was my challenge.

What is a zine I hear you say? Well if you have been listening to Triple J breakfast this week you would be well zine-knowledged but if not, Wikepedia best explains it as, “A zine (an abbreviation of the word fanzine, or magazine; pronounced /ˈziːn/ “zeen”) is most commonly a small circulation publication of original or appropriated texts and images. A significant majority are produced in editions of less than 100, and profit is not the primary intent of publication. Zines are written in a variety of formats, from computer-printed text to comics to handwritten text. Print remains the most popular zine format, usually photo-copied with a small circulation. Topics covered are broad, including fanfiction, politics, art and design, ephemera, personal journals, social theory, single topic obsession, or sexual content far enough outside of the mainstream to be prohibitive of inclusion in more traditional media”.

Keen to see a ‘zine’ for yourself (including my little snapper) or something more, then come to Propel’s Block Party, details below:

Venue: KURB gallery (214 William St, Northbridge)
Date: Sunday, 30th May 2010
Time: 3 – 6pm

Want to join in? Come and try some DIY! We also need you to put the finishing touches to the showcase – free form your tattoo designs onto our mannequin Frank, put together a badge, leave your mark, or say something out loud on the Polaroid.

If you want to break into the industry, this is also an opportunity to mingle with the arts people in the know, as workshops facilitators will be there too.

There’ll be music, party food and cordial on tap. Doors will be open at 3pm. The afternoon will be super relaxed so you can come to KURB whenever you like.

Bring your whole neighbourhood, and we hope to see you there!

Propel and the twentyten team.

Go on do it! – TFC xx
